Beethoven's CHORAL FANTASY, for piano, choir, and orchestra in c minor op.
80, marks Beethoven's first successful marriage of choral and instrumental
music, something he would revisit in his Ninth Symphony. The Choral Fantasy,
which includes a long piano solo that Beethoven wrote for himself, was first
performed on December 22, 1808 as the finale of a long concert that also
featured the premieres of Beethoven's fifth and sixth symphonies. He wrote the
work just days before the performance; in fact, scholars believe that most of
the piano solo was improvised during the performance.
Notation timing and articulation based, as closely as possible, on a 1962
recorded performance at Manhattan Center, New York City by the New York
Philharmonic Orchestra & Westminster Choir, conducted by Leonard Bernstein with
Rudolf Serkin at the piano.
