Cherubini settled in France in 1788 becoming Director of the Paris Conservatoire in 1822 where Berlioz was one of his more"difficult" students. In his early days he wrote numerous operas but later specialised in chuch music. This Symphony was commissioned by the then newly formed Philharmonic Society of London, who later commissioned Beethoven' 9th Symphony.
