| Comments: | London born William Yeates Hurlstone was a favourite pupil of Sir Charles Stanford and was appointed professor of counterpoint at the Royal College of Music in 1905. He succumbed to the asthma that had prevented him from becoming a concert pianist the following year, but not before having written some fine music including a piano concerto and this Phantasie. This piece was the first winner of an annual prize awarded by the wealthy English amateur violinist, Walter Cobbett (1847-1937), in the years leading up to the first World War, for chamber works in the form of a phantasie. |
