Comments:Georges Onslow (English / French) was the French born grandson of the 1st Earl of Onslow (after whom Onslow Square in London's West End is named). He was a very prolific writer of chamber music during the 1st half of the 19th Century and was sometimes referred to as the "French Beethoven". Louis Spohr thought highly enough of his music as to include some of Onslow's quartets in his chamber concerts, alongside those of his own and of Beethoven.
London based Theo Wyatt has lately reprinted the parts and sometimes the scores of this and many other lesser-known chamber works, graded according to difficulty of execution, at very reasonable prices. You can e-mail him at mertonmusic@argonet.co.uk to ask for a copy of his very interesting catalogue.
ASV have issued a CD of two of Onslow's later quartets, played by the Coull String Quartet (CD DCA 808).
