Comments:Written at the age of 19. The composer started work on a second symphony a couple years later but then got bogged down with opera for the rest of his life, Nethertheless, he conducted a performance of this symphony not long before he died. His son Siegfried also wrote a symphony, in the late romantic style, over 90 years later after he himself had retired from writing operas.
