Sara Teasdale was an American lyric poet. Born in St. Louis in 1884, she won the first Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1918. Her exquisite "Christmas Carol" was published in 1911 in a collection entitled Helen of Troy and Other Poems. Each verse introduces a new group of visitors bringing gifts for the infant Jesus: richly-adorned kings, poor shepherds, wise men, and the choir of angels. Finally they all enter into the stable to hear the angels' song, which lulls the holy child to sleep.
