The story behind this symphony is based on the poem "Lenore" by Gottfried Burger. The 2 opening movements describe Lenore's love for her soldier sweetheart. The 3rd movement shows him marching off to war. He dies in battle, but comes back on his ghostly steed to take Lenore off to be united with him in death in the finale. This was the most frequently played of Raff's 11 symphonies during his lifetime.
