| Comments: | Written ~1744-1748. Published posthumously in 1751 (a year after Bach's death) by his son, CPE Bach. Corrected, edited, and re-published in 1754. No instrumentation for this intended quadruple fugue was indicated. Bach completed the first three subjects and indicated that the fourth subject should/would be the notational equivalent of his name, B-A-C-H. The work was published in "open score," four staves of music (primarily) written in C-Clefs to maintain notation near the middle of the staff. Either the completed score was left as a compositional problem in the "Art of Fugue" for future generations of composers, or the composer's own completion for the fugue was lost. Tovey's completion of Contrapunctus-19 was written in 1931 and originally scored for string quintet. Scored for 2 Pedal Harpsichords by the arranger. |
