Hoffstetter was a Benedictine monk who wrote a number of string quartets strongly influenced by Haydn's early quartet style. Indeed, this one is from a set of 6 passed off by publishers as being by Haydn himself. Right up to the late 1950's it was universally known as Haydn's Op 3 No 5. The Serenade slow movement was, in the 1940's and 50's , used by the BBC Home Service as an introduction to their beginners' chamber music programme, "Music in Miniature".
The 1st violin part in the 2nd movement was originally marked "con Sordino", but neither Noteworthy nor General Midi have any provision for muted strings.
I once again acknowledge the help he had from Grant Hicks with proof reading.
