Alford, (Maj. Frederick Joseph Ricketts) was apparently out golfing when the two-tone whistle often used by British servicement was heard to warn a slower group of a faster group coming through.
The tune was famously whistled on the movie "Bridge Over the River Kwai" and the infamous "Hitler, he only had one ball" lyrics were added by WWII servicemen, much to Alford's chagrin.
