Charles Stanford and was appointed professor of counterpoint at the Royal
College of Music in 1905. He succumbed to the asthma that had prevented him
from becoming a concert pianist the following year, but not before having
written some fine music including a piano concerto and this Phantasie.
This piece was the first winner of an annual prize awarded by the
wealthy English amateur violinist, Walter Cobbett (1847-1937), in the years
leading up to the first World War, for chamber works in the form of a
phantasie.
