This started out as a simple few bars I liked, and then developed a somewhat dark edge. I soon discovered that those first few bars were from Disney's Pinocchio, and must have slipped into my subconscious by virtue of watching the video with my kids a million times.
I then decided to carry the rest of the piece through, with the idea of (somewhat tongue-in-cheek) musically describing how Pinocchio's bliss was, in his young adulthood, interrupted by an impending war that he ultimately had to participate in.
However, I became a bit more serious as things went on. The final moments of Pinocchio's participation in the war are summarized in the last movement, the harmonies of which were inspired by the Chopin's Fantaisie-Impromptu in C#m, Op.66 (1835).
