Fugue 1a: (4 part fugue) straightforward fugue in 4:4 introducing the original theme (eight-bars).
Fugue 1b: (4 part fugue) slight rhythmic variation to the original theme using 6:8 and a dotted rhythm.
Fugue 1c: (4 part fugue) based on the inversion of the original theme and using a formal counter-subject; dimunitions of the original and inverted themes are introduced towards the end.
Fugue 1d: (4 part fugue) based on the retrograde of the original theme.
Fugue 1e: (3 part fugue) uses an extended version of the original theme (8 bars of 8:4) in a dotted rhythm; combined in various ways with the original theme (or its inversion) and a free part.
Fugue 1f: (4 part fugue) based on a shortened version of the original theme (4 bars of 4:4) and its inversion; combined in various ways with their dimunitions.
Fugue 1g: (4 part fugue) based on a shortened version (6 bars of 4:4) of the retrograde of the original theme and its inversion; a series of short fugues each in a different mode, starting and ending in the Phrygian mode.
Fugue 1h; (4 part fugue) based on the counter-subject from fugue 1c combined in various ways with the original theme and it inversion/retrograde.
Fugue 1i: (4 part fugue) the original theme with a minor rhythmic change so it can be played with its inversion/retrograde.
Fugue 1j: (4 part fugue) based on a new counter-theme (and its inversion) devised so that it can be played against the original theme in 6ths or 3rds (with the fourth part taking a free role)
