The first movement (in sonata form) has a certain restlessness due to the 7/8 time signature of the main theme.
It surrenders to the second theme in 3/4 time, and continues in this rhythm throughout the development. Signatures 7/8 and 3/4 are restored in the recapitulation.
The second movement reflects, in my mind, dreary raindrops slowly dripping on the windowpane on a gray and melancholy day. The third movement is a simple and happy minuet. The fourth movement is a fugal sonata. One can think of the theme as singing "Hosanna in Excelsis".
