This work was written in less than 3 weeks on Spohr's first visit to England in 1820 in response to a commission from the Philharmonic Society of London. Spohr was very impressed with the abilities of the London string players and gave them plenty of chance to show off these skills. He is also reputed to be one of the first conductors to introduce the baton to English audiences. This symphony remained a popular work in the English repertory right down to the end of the 19th century.
