String Quartet No3 in D minor, Op.1(Quatuor Brillant No.1). Composed 1806.

Louis Spohr, in his prime, was regarded as second only to Paganini as a violin virtuoso. He wrote 17 violin concertos, 4 clarinet concertos, 10 symphonies, 2 Oratorios , several operas and a large quantity of chamber music for strings and other instruments.He is credited with introducing the violinist's chin rest, the conductor's baton and rehearsal marks on scores.He and Beethoven both built on the foundations laid down by Haydn and Mozart, but in completely different ways.
Of the 36 string quartets wrote between 1804 and 1857, six were in the "quatuor brillant" form devised by the French violinist/composer Pierre Rode (1774-1830).These are 3 movement works in which the other 3 instruments form a sort of "backing group" for the virtuoso part played by the first violin.
