Arguably Spohr's finest symphony; sticks to the standard 4 movement form without the "gimmicks" found in some of his other symphonies. The use of the slow opening theme later on in the opening movement and as the second subject of the finale has a unifying effect on the work as a whole.Students of the Victorian music hall may recognise the origin of the chorus of "Two lovely Black Eyes" in the scherzo!
