These 36 files have been notated from a collection edited by Emil Hoffmann, published as "Alte Bläser-Musiken" (Edition Merseburger 1303: Verlag Merseburger Berlin, 1956). The music comes from the period between 1600 and 1800. Dynamics and performance notes are mostly those indicated by the editor, although I have made a few minor changes to them. Precise instrumentation is not given in the scores, so I have assigned parts as I thought best. Some of the five-part pieces could as easily be played by an ensemble of 3 trumpets, horn and trombone (or tuba) as by a standard brass quintet (2 trumpets, horn, trombone, tuba); I have arranged them for standard quintet. The four-part pieces are usually scored for two treble-clef instruments which I've designated Trumpets 1 & 2, and two bass-clef instruments which I've designated French Horn (notated in treble clef as usual) and Trombone/Tuba. I have not transposed any of the parts: all are written in concert pitch. If users need transposed parts, they can either contact me or apply the transposition themselves to the trumpet and/or French horn parts, as required.
composers are Altenburg, Melchior Franck, Handel, Hausmann, Kindermann, von Hessen, Pezelius, Reiche, Schein, Scheidt
