Written ~1744-1748. Published posthumously in 1751 (a year after Bach's death) by his son, CPE Bach. Corrected, edited, and re-published in 1754. No instrumentation for Art of Fugue was indicated excepting Contrapunctus XVII (for two harpsichords). It was published in "open score," four staves of music (primarily) written in C-Clefs in order to maintain notation near the middle of the staff. Scored for 2 Pedal Harpsichords by the arranger.
